Education Secretary Arne Duncan to speak at 2013 Commencement

Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, will be the keynote speaker this year as Morgan prepares to celebrate Commencement 2013. Secretary Duncan has been a strong advocate for quality public education, and a great supporter of the role of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in producing graduates to strengthen the competitiveness of the United States. You can learn more about Secretary Duncan here. The fulfillment of a dream will be realized for more than 900 students who will receive their bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees on May 18, 2013. Commencement ceremonies get underway promptly at 10:00 a.m. with the procession of graduates into the University's W.A.C. Hughes Memorial Stadium. Morgan President David Wilson has announced that renowned author and entrepreneur Eddie C. Brown will be the keynote speaker for the 2013 Honors Convocation. Each year, Morgan State University celebrates outstanding student academic achievement with the annual Honors Convocation, which is held in the Gilliam Concert Hall of the Murphy Fine Arts Center. This year’s convocation is being held on April 4^th at 11:00 a.m., featuring the chairman, CEO and founder of Brown Capital Management, as keynote speaker. Brown will address students and faculty about his brand of success, perseverance, and what it takes to beat the odds. The nationally known businessman, philanthropist and author recently released an autobiography, appropriately titled, “Beating the Odds.” With over 4 decades of experience in the industry, Brown now heads one of the nation’s oldest and most successful African American owned investment management companies. Ernst and Young recognized him as an “Entrepreneur of the Year” in the financial services industry and Black Enterprise named him one of the “40 most powerful African Americans in business.” In addition to serving on numerous boards and commissions at the federal, state and local levels, Brown is also well known for his philanthropy. He and his wife, Sylvia, launched the Turning the Corner Achievement Program in 2002, providing expanded educational opportunities for African American middle school students in Baltimore. They have both committed time and financial resources to many other educational ventures, including support for students at Morgan State University and those studying the fine arts.

Morgan was chosen this year as 1 of 19 schools to participate in the Coca-Cola Sprite Films Competition. The 2013 Sprite Films™ Program is a nationwide competition that gives university students a chance to enter a storyboard with corresponding script for a Sprite® 60-second spot ("60-second Spot") that will be judged by industry professionals. On January 30th, 2013 at 6:30 pm, the Office of Residence Life and Housing (ORL&H) and the Academic Enrichment Program (AEP), will be honoring the stellar academic performance of our residential students at the AEP’s “Power Live 2013: Living the Dream” Awards Ceremony. Power Live is an annual program hosted by the AEP which honors students in the residence halls who have obtained the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA), as well as students who have demonstrated significant academic gains in the ARISE program and the Morgan MILE. For the first time this year, all Power Live “Highest GPA” awardees will also be inducted into our inaugural class of AEP Residential Scholars. The honor of being inducted into the AEP Residential Scholars Program is only afforded to those on-campus residents who have achieved the highest cumulative GPA in their residence hall.

Students Shine at National Biomedical and Behavioral Research Conference

By: Dr. Christine Hohmann Ms. Rachael Matthews, Chemistry senior, and Mr. Amon Dow, III, Civil Engineering senior and MBRS RISE student researcher, presented poster presentations at the 2012 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students held in San Jose, California on November 7-10, 2012. This national conference was attended by more that 3,400 people, including 2,100 students. More than 1,700 of the attending students participated in poster and oral presentations in 12 subdisciplines of the biomedical and behavioral sciences. For their outstanding poster presentation in their respective disciplines, Ms. Matthews and Mr. Dow received recognition and monetary awards in their disciplines. Mr. Dow also received an additional monetary award for his interdisciplinary research. An associate professor of teacher education in the School of Education and Urban Studies, Dr. Bridges has recently received acceptance for presentations at several national conferences. 2013 Presentation Schedule Paper accepted for the 7th annual International Technology, Education and Development Conference in Valencia (Spain) on the 4th, 5th and 6th of March, 2013. Paper title: Bad Boys” to Master Teachers: The Making of Black Male Teacher Identity. Paper will be presented virtually. Paper accepted for the 2013 AERA (American Education Research Association) Conference in San Francisco, CA (April 27-May 1). Conference theme is “Education and Poverty: Theory, Research, Policy and Praxis.” Paper has been placed in a Paper Session titled, “African American Males & Females: Challenges and Transformation” Papers presented at the 2012 AERA Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (a) Symposium: Black Males in the Education Pipeline: Asset-Based Pedagogy for the 21st Century. Special Interest Group: Critical Examination of Race, Ethnicity, Class and Gender in Education. Paper: Towards a Pedagogy of Hip Hop in Urban Teacher Education (b) Symposium: Teacher Education and the Black Community: Preparing Teachers to Teach Black Students, Preparing Black Students to Become Teachers. Morgan Faculty, Students Present at National Science Education Conference

Associate Professor of Science Education, Catherine Martin-Dunlop, recently presented a research paper at the 20th annual conference of the Association for Science Teacher Education (ASTE)in Charleston, South Carolina (January 9-12). She took four graduate students from her department and they also presented research papers. Samantha Strachan's presentation and poster was titled, "Exploring Foreign Science Teachers' Perceptions of Cross-Cultural Classroom Issues." She is also a member of ASTE's Equity Committee and is working to increase the number of African American students and university faculty who attend this conference. Megan Moffa, Ana Lluch, and Shenell Bolden had a 1-hour presentation titled, "An Empirical Study of Scientific Reasoning Skills Among Urban Secondary Students." Their hands-on session required the audience to do the actual test that they had given to their own high school students as part of an action research project for Professor Martin-Dunlop's class. Professor Martin-Dunlop's research included quantitative data gathered over six years on graduate students' understanding of the nature of science.
